Why Romley Estate?

 

Romley Estate is a boutique olive grove and farm, located on the beautiful rolling hills of Willunga, in the McLaren Vale wine region of South Australia.

Owners Mon and Rob for many years had longed to move away from city life and find a little patch of earth where they could find peace and quiet, and produce something from the land. After many years in the corporate world, and building a mortgage broking business, Mon managed to convince Rob that back home in South Australia was the place to be. In Willunga, near the coast and beautiful rolling hills, and close enough to the city for Rob to continue his IT work. So Mon set out to find the perfect property, and the rest as they say is history.
 

Where does the name 'Romley Estate' come from?

Mon and Rob wanted to personalise the name of the farm, and be a little different. So after many months and sleepless nights of deliberating names, Mon dreamt up with the name Romley Estate. "It is a combination of all of our names", says Mon. "Rob, Mon, Lilly, Sammy, Freddie and Ralfie. Letters from our names and our pets names make up the name Romley!". Hence, the name, Romley Estate was born.

Initially, the thought was to just pick the olives, make some olive oil and hopefully sell it, and that was it. But then entrepreneurial Mon thought that if she's going to do this and put her name to it, it will be done properly with a brand, smart labeling, and producing a product of an exceptional quality.

Mon and Rob had little farming experience, let alone olive growing experience when they moved to the farm. So Mon set about asking local olive growers and farmers for advice, and has since spent the entire time on the farm learning about the fascinating history, benefits of olive oil, and farming principles of olive trees. Mon is now so passionate about all things olive, she visits Europe once a year on educational trips, and is learning how to create as many different products as she can dream up, from the olive grove.

There have been many highs and lows of course, being new farmers. But the successes have far outweighed the challenges, and the result is shown in the high quality of the extra virgin olive oil that is produced and winning many national and international awards.

The farm is luckily positioned in an ideal climate for growing olives, with warm to hot, dry summers, and mild to cool, wet winters with no little to no frost. The olive grove has 7 varietals of olive tree, which all bear fruit, ripen at different times, and taste completely different of course!  The varieties are: Frantoio, Picual, Koroneiki, Kalamata, California Queen (UC13A6), Hardy's Mammoth, Pendolino.
