Health Benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

There are a wide range of well-evidenced health benefits related to Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). But this only pertains to high quality EVOO, with a high phenol content (like Romley Estate).

Phenols are essential to EVOO’s health benefits. Due to minimal processing, EVOO is the only oil that retains important natural phenols! EVOO is processed in a manner similar to many fruit juices: the fruit is crushed and the juice is extracted. In contrast, the other grades of olive oil, (“pure” and “light”), as well as inexpensive oils such as soybean and canola, go through an industrial refining process that strips away phenols. Phenolic content also diminishes with time, and particularly when exposed to heat, light and oxidation, so EVOO should be stored in a cool dark place and used within a couple months of opening a container.

Here are some on the studied benefits of consuming at least 25-50ml of GOOD QUALITY EVOO per day:

  • Prevention of Overall Mortality

  • Prevention of CVD, Coronary Heart Disease, and Myocardial Infarction

  • Prevention of Diabetes or improved Glycaemic Control in existing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

  • Reduction in Overall Cancer Incidence

  • Prevention of Neurodegenerative Diseases

  • Prevention of Mood Disorders

  • Reversal of Fatty Liver Disease

  • Prevention of Overweight and Obesity

  • Lowered Blood Pressure

  • Improved Blood Levels of Lipids and Lipoproteins

I like to add a tablespoon to my morning smoothie (it gives it a nice, creamy texture), as well as using it in all my cooking (from roasting to baking to stir-frying), and as a salad dressing (paired with a good lashing of my Garlic Salt & Pepper.
